CBS Hosts Staff from 6 Partner European Schools - Wed 14 Jun 2017

Erasmus + Teachers’ Mobility Visit to Armagh CBS

The Christian Brothers’ Primary School had the great honour of hosting 27 visitors from 6 different European countries recently. The visit to the CBS was organised within the framework of the EU funded ‘Erasmus+ 14-17’ project entitled ‘Net Is the Key.’ The purpose of the teachers’ visit to the CBS was to explore and exchange teaching and learning experiences between the schools in relation to issues of Internet Safety and Online Collaboration.

The visiting party comprised of 6 staff from Varese in Italy, 7 Sardinian teachers from Sassari, two Polish teachers from Zamosc, three Turkish staff from Usak, 6 Romanian guests from Rakovski and 3 visitors from the Smirneski region of Bulgaria. A week long programme of events, visits and celebrations were organised by the CBS to showcase the best of Armagh and to draw the ‘Net Is The Key’ project to a close.
Included in the busy programme of events was a visit to Dublin city centre on the arrivals day which afforded each group an opportunity to see the main attractions of the city. Day two started with a morning visit to the Giant’s Causeway followed up by a quick tour of the world famous Bushmills Distillery, before finishing off with a meal in the Ramore restaurant, Portrush.

Day 3 was the day most enjoyed by our pupils and staff as we eagerly awaited the chance to showcase our wonderful school and pupils. Our guests were welcomed by the school’s Senior Management team, members of the Board of Governors and local MLA Mr. Justin McNulty, before being brought to our main assembly hall to watch a fantastic whole school assembly entitled ‘Cultúr na hÉireann – A Celebration of Irish Culture!’ They were treated to a feast of Irish dance, traditional music, a pupil-led demonstration of sporting skill, an audio-visual presentation of Irish imagery and Gaelic culture and finally a host of traditional and modern singing by the pupils of the school. It was no surprise that at the end of the assembly they received a standing ovation from all who were present. Their visit to the school was rounded off with a guided tour, provided by year 7 pupils, of the school grounds and buildings, allowing each group the opportunity to visit classrooms, meet with our pupils and staff more directly and observe lessons as they were being delivered by teaching staff.
Next on the itinerary was a visit to the Palace Demense where they received a civic welcome by Mayor of Armagh - Mr. Gareth Keating. Numerous gifts were exchanged between Mayor Keating and our guests before we headed onwards for a quick tour of the cathedrals in the town.
And finally, day 4 was another busy day which started off with a visit to the Ulster Folk Museum in Cultra to explore an Irish village and rural setting from the 1800’s. After this we moved on to Belfast City centre where our guests enjoyed some shopping and sightseeing in the city before taking a private bus tour of Belfast and the surrounding areas. Day 4 was completed with a three course meal to celebrate our project achievements before the project was formally concluded with the CBS presenting each school with a commemorative plaque and gift to display in each of their schools at home.

The whole CBS community would like to take this opportunity to thank our guests for coming to visit us and hope that we will all be able to collaborate and hopefully work together again in a future shared education project.
