Ulster Handball Finals - Sun 05 Mar 2017

Christian Brothers’ Handballers Compete in Ulster Finals.

Nine handballers from the Christian Brothers’ Primary School travelled to Belfast recently to compete in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Ulster Handball Finals.  The C.B.S. pupils had won their respective Co. Armagh titles to qualify for the Ulster Finals.

In the girls competition first up was Naoise Hughes in the U11 Singles.  Naoise beat the Tyrone and Donegal champions but unfortunately a defeat to Monaghan in her final game cost her a place in the final.  A remarkable achievement by Naoise all the same.  Next up saw Aoife Gribben and Niamh McParland compete in the U11 Doubles.  Aoife and Niamh played fantastically throughout, defeating their counterparts from Cavan and Monaghan to reach the final.  In the final they came up against the very strong Tyrone County Champions and lost narrowly.  Although disappointed not proceed to all-Ireland level – Niamh and Aoife can be proud of their efforts.  The final girl from the C.B.S., Aine Gribben, was competing in the U13 age group and was defeated by older girls from Cavan and Monaghan.  Aine still battled bravely throughout.

The boys’ competition was held Colaiste Feirste in Beechmount.  First up at this venue was Seamus McCann who was participating in the U13 age group, even though he is only aged 11.  Unfortunately age counted against Seamus and he was narrowly defeated in both group matches by older pupils from Donegal and Monaghan.  In the U13 Doubles event, Oran Callaghan and Tiernan Campbell defeated the Donegal champions in game 1 but unfortunately a defeat to Monaghan in the 2nd group match saw them lose out on the final. Like Seamus, Oran and Tiernan are only aged 11 and were competing against older boys in the U13 age group.

In the U11 Boys Event, illness to Shea Carr saw him unable to attend and he missed the competition.  It was left to Michael McSorley and Patrick Lynch to represent Co. Armagh in the U11 Doubles.  The C.B.S. pupils started superbly, winning both group games against the county champions from Monaghan and Donegal and earning a place in the Ulster Final against the Tyrone champions.  Although the two C.B.S. pupils performed magnificently, they were narrowly defeated.  They can definitely be proud of their efforts though.
Despite each and every one playing to the best of their ability, unfortunately no Ulster titles were won.  The fact Armagh reached two finals in the U11 age group shows the enormous strides being made in handball in the county.  The Christian Brothers’ are very proud of the boys and girls efforts, not only in winning the Co. Armagh titles, but in the work put in every week when training afterschool with Joe Kelly.
